Evoked Potential Testing
AMBETTER-CP.MP.134
This policy covers evoked potential testing (e.g., SSEP, MEP, BAEP, VEP) for diagnostic and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring to help prevent neurologic injury during neurological, orthopedic, spinal and vascular surgeries, and for evaluation/monitoring of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, optic nerve and auditory lesions, acute anoxic encephalopathy (prognosis within 72 hours), spinal cord injury assessment, infant hearing screening, and peripheral/degenerative neuropathies. Major limitations: evoked potentials are not covered for evaluation of brain death, coma prognosis beyond the initial 72 hours, many non‑operative uses (including MEPs for non‑operative monitoring), VEP for glaucoma/amblyopia/diabetes or post‑chiasmal disease, and other indications lacking sufficient evidence—coverage is limited to the specific indications listed in the policy.
