CG-LAB-29 Gamma Glutamyl Transferase Testing

This policy addresses gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) testing using blood (serum or plasma). It is covered when used to differentiate the source of an elevated alkaline phosphatase or to evaluate liver function/injury/disease in individuals with any of the following: known or suspected hepatobiliary disease; alcohol or substance use disorder; therapy with potentially hepatotoxic medications; exposure to hepatotoxins; infections that can cause liver injury (e.g., viral hepatitis, amoebiasis, tuberculosis); pancreatic or gastrointestinal disease; liver transplantation; primary or secondary malignancy; or other conditions with possible liver involvement (e.g., diabetes, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis, iron/mineral metabolism disorders, lupus, hypertension, heart failure). GGT blood testing is not medically necessary when these criteria are not met.
