Policy Summary
This policy addresses radioactive seed localization (RSL) for guiding surgery in breast and axillary lesions. RSL is medically necessary to localize a nonpalpable breast lesion prior to surgical excision and to assist in targeted excision of previously positive axillary lymph nodes after neoadjuvant therapy. It is not medically necessary when these criteria are not met, including use to localize palpable breast lesions.
