MED.00059 Idiopathic Environmental Illness (IEI)
ANTHEM-MED.00059
This policy addresses diagnostic laboratory tests and treatments for idiopathic environmental illness (IEI), also known as multiple chemical sensitivity, clinical ecology, or universal allergy. Anthem considers all IEI-related diagnostic tests and treatments—including avoidance therapy, elimination diets, neutralizing therapy with chemical/food extracts, and other medical therapies—investigational and not medically necessary; therefore, they are not covered. There are no covered indications for IEI under this policy, and services (e.g., those billed with unlisted code 99199) are subject to noncoverage.
"Laboratory tests designed to affirm the diagnosis of idiopathic environmental illness are consideredinvestigational and not medically necessary."
