TRANS.00035 Therapeutic use of Stem Cells, Blood and Bone Marrow Products

This policy addresses the therapeutic use of stem cells and related blood/bone marrow-derived products (including mesenchymal stem cell therapy) administered by infusion or injection for tissue repair or disease treatment. Anthem deems these therapies investigational/experimental and not medically necessary for prevention or treatment of any condition. There are no covered indications under this policy; noncoverage applies to autologous and allogeneic sources (e.g., blood, bone marrow, amniotic/placental/umbilical tissues) and includes uses for peripheral vascular disease, orthopedic, autoimmune, inflammatory, and degenerative conditions.
