This policy addresses implantation of an artificial anal sphincter as a surgical treatment for severe fecal incontinence. Anthem considers artificial anal sphincter devices investigational and not medically necessary; therefore, they are not covered. There are no covered indications or exceptions under this policy, regardless of the cause or severity of fecal incontinence.
