This policy addresses catheter-based renal sympathetic nerve ablation (renal denervation) using radiofrequency or high-intensity ultrasound, typically proposed for resistant hypertension. Anthem considers this procedure investigational and not medically necessary for all indications; therefore, it is not covered with no exceptions. Related services billed under HCPCS/CPT codes C1735, C1736, and E1704 are not covered.
