SURG.00142 Genicular Procedures for Treatment of Knee Pain

Policy SURG.00142 addresses genicular nerve procedures for knee pain, including genicular nerve blocks (diagnostic or therapeutic) and genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation (RFA), including cooled RFA. Anthem considers all of these services investigational/experimental and not medically necessary for treating knee pain (e.g., osteoarthritis, prophylactic or adjunctive use around total knee replacement, or in patients not eligible for surgery), and they are not covered. There are no covered indications under this policy.
