SURG.00146 Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal

This policy addresses extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R), including venovenous and arteriovenous systems used to remove CO2 at low blood flows. Anthem considers ECCO2R investigational/experimental and not medically necessary; therefore, it is not covered for any indication. This noncoverage applies to all conditions, including acute hypercapnic respiratory failure, and related services (e.g., billed under HCPCS/CPT 37799) are not covered.
