Traction Devices for Use in the Home
DME101.046
This policy addresses traction devices for use in the home, covering cervical and lumbar traction intended to relieve muscle spasm, nerve‑root compression, osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease, short‑term pain and range‑of‑motion restoration, and includes an Illinois‑only mandate (Public Act 103‑0458) requiring coverage for therapy, testing, and equipment for children with low‑tone neuromuscular, neurological, or cognitive impairments. Major limitations are that home traction is considered experimental/investigational and not supported for cervical or lumbar pain due to insufficient, low‑quality and inconsistent evidence (most trials in adults >18), FDA Class I registration does not require efficacy data, and the policy is inactive and must not be used for current claims adjudication.
