Pediatric Abdomen Imaging Guidelines
EVICORE-CARDIOVASCULAR_RADIOLOGY-4AB9F4D3
This policy covers pediatric abdominal imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) for patients under 18 with common abdominal symptoms and syndromes such as generalized abdominal pain, right lower quadrant pain, flank pain/renal stone, UTI, gastroenteritis, hematuria, inflammatory bowel disease, postoperative pain, liver/adrenal lesions and related conditions. Major limitations/requirements include physician review for atypical presentations, a recent (≤60 days) face‑to‑face evaluation before advanced imaging, preferential use of ultrasound prior to advanced imaging, MRI with and without contrast unless contraindicated, anesthesia planning for young children (<7 years), and avoidance of screening or repeat studies unless results will change management.
