Abdomen Imaging Guidelines

This policy covers abdomen imaging—guidance for ordering diagnostic abdominal and pelvic imaging for common symptoms and specific conditions including abdominal pain, suspected abscess/sepsis, renal/ureteral stones, gastroenteritis, mesenteric/colonic ischemia, postoperative pain, blunt trauma, hernias, masses, adrenal lesions, aneurysm evaluation/follow‑up, bariatric and gastrostomy imaging, and many other abdominal indications. Major limitations/requirements include physician review for atypical presentations, a current clinical evaluation within 60 days (history/physical, relevant labs or non‑advanced imaging) before advanced imaging, defined abdomen/pelvis imaging boundaries, RADCAT triage/urgency grading, pregnancy considerations, and coding/contrast notes (IV contrast coding only; shellfish allergy does not imply iodinated contrast allergy).
