Pediatric Abdomen Imaging Guidelines
EVICORE-PED-ABDOMEN-IMAGING-GUIDELINES
This policy covers pediatric abdominal imaging (plain radiography, ultrasound, CT, MR, and nuclear medicine) for children with a wide range of abdominal symptoms and conditions—such as generalized or localized abdominal pain (RLQ, RUQ, flank), UTI, hematuria, gastroenteritis, IBD, postoperative pain, abdominal masses, and liver/renal/adrenal lesions—organized by condition-specific sections. Major requirements: ultrasound is the preferred initial study, advanced imaging is generally reserved until after clinical evaluation and basic imaging and/or failure of conservative therapy (typically 4 weeks) unless red-flag findings allow immediate advanced imaging; atypical presentations require physician review and imaging that will not affect management is not indicated.
