South Carolina Medicaid covers durable medical equipment, medical supplies and appliances—consumable or reusable items prescribed by a clinician that meet the DME definition and are necessary to support individuals with illness or injury in performing basic activities of daily living (including, in limited cases, children with special orthopedic or neurologic needs)—available by rental or purchase (purchase price is the Plan maximum); repairs and replacements may be covered subject to warranty status, non‑abuse, cost‑effectiveness, and a typical useful lifetime (generally ~5 years). Coverage is determined case‑by‑case with medical director review and medical necessity required, and many items are expressly excluded or deemed not medically necessary (e.g., fracture frames, electronic bowel irrigation systems, dynamic mechanical stretching devices, most customized items, and other devices lacking sufficient evidence or suitable equivalents).
"Item meets the definition for durable medical equipment (DME)."
