Medicare covers implantable infusion pumps and associated services when used for conditions specified in CMS NCD Manual Chapter 1 Part 4 §280.14 and when pumps are used to deliver medications via intra-arterial, intrathecal, or epidural routes. Intrathecal ziconotide is only covered when the patient is intolerant of or refractory to other treatments (including systemic analgesics, adjunctive therapies, or intrathecal morphine); implantation is contraindicated for patients with drug hypersensitivity, active infection, insufficient body size, or unmanaged interactions with other implanted programmable devices.
