Speech Generating Devices (SGD)

Speech Generating Devices (HCPCS E2500, E2502, E2504, E2506, E2508, E2510, E2511) are covered when a non-conflicted SLP performs and documents a formal evaluation showing the beneficiary has a severe expressive speech impairment, cannot meet speaking needs via natural methods, has the cognitive/physical ability and treatment plan (including training) to use the device, and the device is expected to provide benefit. Coverage requires forwarding the SLP evaluation to the treating practitioner, compliance with SWO/WOPD and coding requirements, and suppliers must maintain proof of delivery; claims lacking these documentation or not meeting any coverage criteria (including billing more than one SGD) will be denied.
