Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in the Treatment of Adults with Major Depressive Disorder

TMS is covered for adults with a confirmed diagnosis of severe Major Depressive Disorder per the current DSM when the patient has failed one or more adequate trials of psychopharmacologic therapy or has documented intolerance, and when a psychiatrist (MD/DO) has examined the patient and ordered TMS. Coverage is limited to up to six weeks of daily outpatient TMS and excludes patients with absolute contraindications (implanted magnetic-sensitive devices or metal within 30 cm of the coil) and other specified relative contraindications; other uses of TMS, including for OCD, are not covered.
