Non-invasive peripheral arterial vascular studies are covered when signs or symptoms of limb ischemia or other specific vascular abnormalities are present and the results will affect medical or surgical management; testing to establish the level/degree of arterial occlusive disease is covered when the patient is a candidate for intervention. Coverage requires that tests be ordered by the treating physician, performed/interpreted by credentialed personnel or accredited laboratories, and that certain simple bedside tests or nonvalidated modalities (e.g., thermography, handheld Doppler without record) and screening asymptomatic patients are not separately reimbursable.
