Continuous Peripheral Nerve Blocks (CPNB)

This LCD covers continuous peripheral nerve blocks (CPNB) for specified nerve sites (paravertebral, interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, brachial plexus, axillary, femoral, lumbar plexus, sciatic, popliteal) for therapeutic (including CRPS and certain hyperhidroses) and prognostic purposes. CPNB must be performed by a physician or qualified practitioner using real-time ultrasound and/or peripheral nerve stimulation, with a documented pre-procedure evaluation (pain source, underlying pathology) and documented PNS/ultrasound findings; services are not covered 'incident to' physician services in private practice and billing/reporting depends on whether the block is primary anesthesia or adjunctive for postoperative pain control.
