Policy Summary
Medicare covers polysomnography and related sleep studies for diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and select parasomnias when medically necessary and performed in credentialed facilities or by qualified personnel. Coverage specifies device categories (Type I–IV and home tests) and numeric diagnostic thresholds (AHI/RDI and event minima), excludes studies for chronic insomnia and several other non-indicated conditions, and requires documentation of physician orders, facility accreditation, and provider credentials.
