Chromoendoscopy as an Adjunct to Colonoscopy
MED201.022
This policy addresses chromoendoscopy—dye‑based and electronic/virtual adjunct imaging used during colonoscopy to enhance mucosal visualization for colorectal cancer screening, polyp detection/removal, evaluation of symptomatic or higher‑risk individuals (eg, personal/family history of adenomas) and assessment in inflammatory bowel disease. Coverage is governed by the member’s benefit plan and state law; chromoendoscopy is not a substitute for biopsy/histopathology, some adjunct uses (notably certain diagnostic or surveillance applications) may be considered experimental/investigational and not covered, and no specific dye is FDA‑approved for chromoendoscopy.
