Electrostimulation and Electromagnetic Therapy for Treating Wounds
MED201.027
BCBS Texas
Effective: January 1, 2004
Updated: January 7, 2026
Policy Summary
This policy addresses electrostimulation and electromagnetic-field therapies used to promote wound healing—applied to chronic and nonhealing wounds including pressure ulcers (stage II–IV, including in spinal cord injury), diabetic ulcers, and other chronic ulcers. Major limitations are that these indications are considered experimental/investigational and off‑label with no FDA approval for wound healing, the evidence is limited and heterogeneous, and actual coverage is subject to the member’s benefit plan, state rules, and contract terms.
