Interferential Current Stimulation
MED201.041
Interferential current stimulation (IFS) is a transcutaneous electrical therapy proposed for reduction of pain and improvement of function in musculoskeletal conditions (eg, knee osteoarthritis, back, shoulder), and has also been studied or proposed for gastrointestinal disorders (constipation, IBS, dyspepsia) and spasticity. However, the policy deems IFS experimental/investigational and not covered because of inconsistent, limited evidence from small heterogeneous trials, lack of standardized protocols, and potential placebo effects; coverage is ultimately subject to the member’s benefit plan/contract.
