Postsurgical Use of Limb Compression Devices for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis
MED202.073
This policy covers postsurgical use of limb compression devices for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis in patients with a documented contraindication to pharmacologic anticoagulation, especially after major orthopedic surgeries (total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, hip fracture surgery) and after major non‑orthopedic or other orthopedic procedures when the patient is at moderate or high VTE risk. Coverage is limited to home/place-of-residence use for up to 30 days when medically necessary; devices are not separately billable for facility use and are considered experimental/investigational and not covered when anticoagulation is not contraindicated.
