Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI) Management
MED206.003
This policy addresses management of Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI) and limits coverage primarily to a standard initial diagnostic workup (basic chemistry and routine blood tests) and narrowly targeted laboratory testing when specific clinical indications (e.g., suspected autoimmune connective tissue disease or infectious mononucleosis) are present. It applies to patients with recurrent, nonspecific multi‑system symptoms attributed to low‑level chemical, biological, physical, food, or EMF exposures (including MCS/IEI‑EMF), but states that most tests and treatments to diagnose or treat IEI—such as environmental chemical measurements, functional intracellular micronutrient analyses, provocation/allergy testing, LEAP/MRT/ALCAT, immune/mucosal function assays, IVIg, and elimination diets—are experimental/investigational and not covered, with final coverage determined by the member’s benefit plan and applicable state rules.
"Standard initial diagnostic workup (basic chemistry panel and routine blood tests) is appropriate to rule out well-defined illnesses, even in patients with non-specific symptoms."
