SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Antibody Testing

This policy addresses SARS‑CoV‑2 (COVID‑19) serologic (antibody) testing to detect prior infection or evidence of prior vaccination and to assess possible immunity, including use in individuals with prior or suspected COVID‑19 and those with post‑COVID (Long COVID) conditions. However, the policy states that all SARS‑CoV‑2 antibody testing is considered experimental/investigational and not covered (coverage is subject to the member’s benefit plan), is not to be used to diagnose acute infection, and EUA-authorized tests during the public health emergency are not addressed here due to assay timing/variability and uncertainty about whether detected antibodies confer reliable immunity.
