Lipid Testing
NCD102
Medicare covers lipid testing for evaluation and monitoring of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, primary and secondary dyslipidemias, disorders associated with altered lipid metabolism, symptomatic dyslipidemia, and for monitoring patients on anti-lipid dietary or pharmacologic therapy. Routine screening of asymptomatic individuals is not covered (except for certain cardiovascular screening services subject to 42 CFR 410.17 and Claims Processing Manual rules); specific frequency limits include annual lipid panels for long‑term monitoring, up to six component tests in the first year of therapy, and up to three measurements per year of LDL or total cholesterol after treatment goals are met.
"Lipid testing is covered to assess patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or any form of atherosclerotic disease or conditions leading to atherosclerosis."
