Digoxin Therapeutic Drug Assay

Digoxin therapeutic drug assays are covered to diagnose and monitor digoxin toxicity, assess underdosing, monitor compliance, and evaluate levels when clinical changes occur (e.g., symptoms/ECG signs of toxicity, renal/hepatic/thyroid dysfunction, electrolyte or pH abnormalities, medication changes, suspected overdose). Routine annual level checks after steady state may be reasonable; testing is not appropriate for patients on digitoxin or treated with digoxin Fab antibody. After dose changes or interacting medication additions, check levels about one week later, and in toxicity testing may be required more frequently than weekly.
