Diagnostic Endocardial Electrical Stimulation (Pacing)
NCD104
Effective: December 3, 1984
Updated: December 31, 2025
Policy Summary
Medicare covers diagnostic endocardial electrical stimulation (EES) when performed for patients with severe cardiac arrhythmias — notably sustained ventricular tachycardia — to diagnose, localize, and guide treatment of arrhythmias and to assess risk of sudden arrhythmic death. Coverage assumes use of intracardiac electrode catheters, intracardiac/extracardiac recordings, and a stimulator device; an intracardiac His bundle cardiogram is typically obtained but is not separately billable.
