L-Dopa

Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital and SNF services for initiation and administration of L‑Dopa when medically necessary and when the drug meets the §1861(t) definition (compendia listing or hospital P&DT approval). SNF or combined hospital+SNF stays for initiation are generally limited to a total of 4 weeks unless medical necessity is documented; laboratory monitoring and skilled physical therapy evaluation are covered as indicated. Under Part B the L‑Dopa drug itself is not covered as it is self‑administrable, but physician services for administration and management of side effects are covered when reasonable and necessary.
