Policy Summary
Medically necessary blood transfusions (homologous, autologous, or donor-directed) are generally covered by Medicare Parts A and B. Collection, processing, and storage of autologous or donor-directed blood are not separately payable under Part B, and hospitals receive payment for blood and related processing through the DRG/prospective payment system, which includes perioperative blood salvage costs.
