Thermography
NCD164
Effective: December 21, 1992
Updated: December 31, 2025
Policy Summary
Medicare excludes thermography for all indications, including breast lesions, because available evidence does not support its usefulness in diagnosis or treatment. The exclusion was formalized in a CMS Final Notice published in the Federal Register on November 20, 1992; therefore thermography is not a covered service under this NCD.
