Postural drainage procedures and pulmonary exercises are covered when the attending physician documents in the plan of treatment that therapist-level skills are required and the services are furnished by a physical therapist or respiratory therapist in the appropriate covered setting. Physical therapy coverage includes inpatient, extended care, home health, and outpatient physical therapy settings; respiratory therapy is covered in inpatient, outpatient hospital, or extended care/SNF settings only when furnished via a hospital with a transfer agreement, and respiratory therapist visits are not payable under the home health benefit.
