Services Provided for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diabetic Sensory Neuropathy with Loss of Protective Sensation (aka Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy)

Medicare covers physician-provided foot evaluations and related basic treatments for beneficiaries with documented diabetic sensory neuropathy with loss of protective sensation (LOPS) when LOPS is confirmed by 5.07 monofilament testing (absence at ≥2 of 5 plantar sites on either foot). The evaluation must include a defined history and physical exam (visual inspection, protective sensation, biomechanics, vascular/skin assessment, footwear need, education), must be documented in the medical record, and is payable no more often than once every six months provided the beneficiary has not seen a foot care specialist for another reason in the interim.
