Vitrectomy

Medicare considers vitrectomy reasonable and necessary when performed for vitreous loss during cataract surgery, vitreous opacities (including vitreous hemorrhage), retinal detachments from vitreous strands, proliferative retinopathy, and vitreous retraction. Payment and coding determinations (including bundling rules and ASC vs physician payment) are governed by the Medicare Claims Processing Manual chapters referenced in the policy.
