Policy Summary
Medicare Part B covers diagnostic Pap smears and related medically necessary services when ordered by a physician for patients with prior cervical/uterine/vaginal cancer (treated or active), prior abnormal Pap smears, abnormal findings of reproductive organs, significant reproductive complaints, or signs/symptoms possibly related to gynecologic disorders. Routine screening Pap smears and pelvic examinations for early detection of cervical or vaginal cancer are governed by a separate policy (see section 210.2).
