Policy Summary
Medicare covers histocompatibility (HLA) testing when reasonable and necessary for preparation of kidney transplants, bone marrow transplants, and platelet transfusions (especially with multiple infusions). Testing for suspected ankylosing spondylitis is covered only when other diagnostic methods are inappropriate or inconclusive, and physician documentation supporting medical necessity must be provided in those cases.
