Policy Summary
Medicare covers esophageal manometry when it is reasonable and necessary for the individual patient, primarily to measure esophageal pressures to assist diagnosis. Indications include evaluation of motility disorders (e.g., achalasia, aperistalsis, spasm, hyper/hypomobility), structural and inflammatory conditions (e.g., esophagitis, ulcers, webs, diverticula, tumors, cysts, scleroderma, hiatal hernia), difficult diagnostic cases, and as an adjunct to radiography or endoscopy; documentation of medical necessity is required.
