Policy Summary
Medicare covers speech-language pathology services for treatment of dysphagia for patients of any age and regardless of coexisting communication disabilities. Coverage explicitly includes dysphagia from causes such as head trauma, stroke, neuromuscular degenerative diseases, head and neck cancer, and encephalopathies; appropriate candidates are motivated, moderately alert patients with some remaining swallowing function.
