Policy Summary
Medicare covers an inpatient oral or dental examination when performed as part of the comprehensive preoperative workup for a renal (kidney) transplant to identify medical/infectious risks that could affect surgical outcomes. Billing must reflect the performer: exams by hospital‑staff dentists are payable under Part A, while exams by physicians are payable under Part B; routine dental care and outpatient dental exams remain excluded under §1862(a)(12).
