Policy Summary
Prosthetic shoes are covered when they function as terminal devices to replace a totally or substantially absent hand or foot, including when a substantial portion of the front part of the foot is missing, and coverage applies even if an artificial limb is not otherwise required. Orthopedic shoes and other supportive foot devices for feet that are impaired but essentially intact are excluded from Medicare payment under Section 1862(a)(8).
