CMS covers mobility assistive equipment when a beneficiary has a personal mobility deficit that significantly limits participation in one or more MRADLs in customary locations within the home, determined using the Clinical Criteria algorithm. Coverage is contingent on trials and assessments (including safe operation, environment adequacy, and consideration of less complex aids), documented physician assessment, and the ability to ameliorate or compensate comorbid conditions (including caregiver support); beneficiaries not meeting these criteria or with unresolved safety/environmental barriers are not covered.
