Seat Lift
NCD221
Medicare covers rental or purchase of medically necessary seat lifts when prescribed by a physician for patients with severe hip or knee arthritis or for patients with muscular dystrophy/other neuromuscular diseases who can benefit therapeutically, provided the item is part of the physician's treatment plan, is likely to improve or arrest deterioration, and the condition is severe enough that otherwise the patient would be chair- or bed-confined. Coverage is restricted to seat lifts that operate smoothly, are patient-controlled, and assist standing/sitting without other assistance; spring-release, catapult-type lifts are excluded and units with recliner features are reimbursed only at the rate for a seat lift without a recliner.
