Policy Summary
Medicare covers hospital beds when a physician's prescription and supporting documentation establish medical necessity because the patient requires specialized body positioning or attachments not feasible with an ordinary bed. Variable-height features, electric-powered adjustments, and side rails are conditionally covered when MAC medical staff documents necessity and when specific clinical criteria are met (e.g., lower-extremity injuries, severe cardiac conditions, spinal cord injury, inability to tolerate position-delay, or requirement for side rails as integral/accessory).
