Air-Fluidized Bed
NCD228
Medicare covers home use of air-fluidized beds for patients with stage 3 or 4 pressure ulcers who are bedridden or chair-bound, would otherwise require institutionalization, and have completed at least one month of conservative treatment without progression toward healing. Coverage requires a written physician order based on a comprehensive assessment, documentation of caregiver availability, consideration of alternatives, and monthly physician recertification; coverage is denied for select contraindications (e.g., significant pulmonary disease, inadequate structural or electrical capacity, non-occlusive dressings, or lack of caregiver).
"Air-fluidized beds are covered for services rendered on or after July 30, 1990."
