This policy (NCD246) has been retired and its coverage rules were incorporated into NCD 20.9.1 effective December 1, 2020; consult NCD 20.9.1 for current coverage criteria. The document defines an artificial heart as a biventricular replacement requiring removal of substantial native heart tissue including both ventricles, and notes that removal of the device is incompatible with life unless the patient undergoes heart transplantation.
