Policy Summary
Medicare may reimburse patient education programs provided by hospitals, SNFs, HHAs, and OPTs when the education is an appropriate, integral, and reasonable/necessary part of a covered medical treatment. Education provided as part of routine nursing, occupational therapy, or physical therapy that directly supports treatment is covered, whereas general preventive programs or education directed to the public that are not closely related to treatment are excluded.
