Medical Nutrition Therapy
NCD252
Medicare Part B covers medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for beneficiaries with diabetes or renal disease as defined in 42 CFR 410.130, providing up to three hours in the first year and two hours in subsequent years. Additional MNT hours may be covered when a physician documents and orders them during the same episode of care because of a change in medical condition, diagnosis, or treatment regimen; MNT and DSMT may both be covered in the same episode provided they are not furnished on the same date of service. Providers must document diagnoses per 42 CFR 410.130 and maintain physician orders and medical records to support year status, additional hours, and non-concurrent service dates.
