Policy Summary
Medicare covers serologic HIV antibody testing when performed to help diagnose symptomatic patients, with initial reactive ELISA results repeated on the same specimen. Confirmatory testing (e.g., Western blot) is covered only when two ELISA tests on the same specimen are both positive; testing as part of screening asymptomatic persons is not covered.
