Policy Summary
Medicare covers alcoholism and drug abuse treatment services (e.g., drug therapy, psychotherapy, patient education) provided incident to a physician's professional service in a freestanding clinic, including post-discharge patients and individuals not in acute stages who need treatment. Coverage requires that services be reasonable and necessary and is subject to the general clinic-service coverage rules and the Medicare Part B psychiatric limitation for noninpatients.
